Storm A. L. Becker
Storm A. L. Becker, son of Johan Albert
Becker and Magdalena Becker, was born about 1774 and
died on June 3, 1804. His wife was Elisabeth Clute, (presumed) daughter of
Gradus Clute and Alida Visscher. Elisabeth was born about 1774 and died on
November 5, 1863. They were married on September 24, 1794 in the
Schaghticoke Reformed Church. Both Storm and Elisabeth are buried in the Van
Schoonhoven Cemetery, along with both sets of parents and various other
close relatives of Elisabeth.
Little is known of Storm and Elisabeth
except what is posted on their gravestones. He died at the young age of 29, only
a year after purchasing the family farms in Halfmoon, Waterford and Lansingburgh from his brother Albertus in 1803.
Elisabeth, on the other hand, lived to the ripe age of 84. She is listed as
a member of
her son Grandus' household in the 1850 census, but not in the 1860 one, by which
time he and his wife and children had moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin. The fact that she is
buried in Van Schoonhoven suggests she remained behind, especially since she was granted
dower rights to a portion of Becker's Island in the Hudson,
although no trace of her was found in the 1860 census in either Waterford or
Stillwater.
Although birth records are not
available, a deed in Saratoga County (Book O, page 588, September
10, 1827) unambiguously establishes the relationship of the brothers John and Nicholas
to Albertus and to their mother.
He is an ancestor of Raymond Merton Becker, whose family
tree is also available on this site.
Children:
Albertus, born November 12, 1795, baptized February 15, 1796 (at the
Albany Dutch Reformed Church), presumably died on September 19, 1883 in La Fayette, NY.
Grandus, born December 2, 1798 in
Stillwater, NY (according to his Saratoga County marriage record),
died on June 20, 1878, buried in Kenosha, WI.
John, born about
1800, lived 2 doors down from Grandus in Stillwater in 1850, and died there on
Feb 21, 1873. He married Ann Eliza Leversee, ca. 1826. He
is buried in the Union Cemetery in Stillwater.
Nicholas Visscher, born about 1802, lived in
Saratoga and Halfmoon,
NY, married Mariah Volweider ca. 1831 and died on November 24, 1885.
