Storm Clute Becker
Storm Clute Becker, son of Grandus Becker
and Elizabeth Clute, was born on July 17, 1849 in Stillwater, New York and
died on December 12, 1878 in Pleasant Prairie, Kenosha County, Wisconsin. He
was married to Catherine Van Patten, known as "Cassie", in the town of Kenosha by Rev. Henry Clark on
April 4, 1872. He is assumed to have traveled with his father and
family from NY to Wisconsin sometime between 1857 and 1860.
Cassie was herself a descendant of
Dutch-Norwegian colonists of upstate New York. although she
was apparently born in Ontario during the family's brief sojourn to the
northern side of the Great Lakes. Her father was William Van Patten
(1819-??), but the exact name of her mother is unclear. On Cassie's death
certificate (she passed away on November 20, 1936), her mother is
listed as "Sarah Dean". However, her marriage record shows her mother
as "Sophia Van Patten", although, there is some doubt about the accuracy
of this information as her father-in-law Grandus had his name misspelled

1878 was a disastrous year for the
Becker family. After Storm's father Grandus died in June at the age
of 79 and shortly after Cassie gave birth to Edith, an epidemic of dyphtheria broke out and claimed
the lives of one-year-old Roy and his 29-year-old father,
Storm. Suddenly, the only Becker male left was little 3-year-old George, with only his mother
Cassie and Aunt Kate left to raise him and Edith and to keep
the farm going. By 1898, the farm had
became too much for the aging sisters-in-law to handle, so they packed
up and moved to a smaller farm in Orland Township, Illinois.
He is a grandfather of Raymond Merton Becker, whose family
tree is also available on this site.
Children:
George Van Patten, born September 1, 1875 in
Pleasant Prairie, died December 24, 1965 in Deer River, MN.
Roy Grandus, born April 7, 1877 in Pleasant Prairie, died November 3, 1878
presumably of dyptheria. Edith Clute, born
October 8, 1878 in Pleasant Prairie, married Edgar Mitchell of Orland Township on October
4, 1899 and died on March 18, 1933.
