Kate Elizabeth Becker

In the 1870's in Kenosha, Wisconsin In the 1910's in Orland Township, Illinois

Kate Elizabeth Becker, daughter of Grandus Becker and Elizabeth Clute, was born on December 2, 1856 in New York (probably in or near Stillwater) and died on May 22, 1926 (probably at her home in Orland Township, Illinois).  It is not known whether Kate ever married.  Not much is known of her except for a family story that claims that in order to survive the diphtheria epidemic of 1878 (which killed her brother Storm and his infant son Roy), she drank kerosene to keep her throat open.  She, her 63-year-old mother, her sister-in-law Cassie along with the infant Edith and the 4-year-old George were left to manage the family dairy farm when both Grandus and Storm died in that disastrous year.  When this farm proved to be too much for them, Cassie and Kate moved to a smaller farm in Orland Township, probably after mother Elizabeth died in 1888.

She is a great-aunt of Raymond Merton Becker, whose family tree is also available on this site.
