Zobrist

Research has uncovered the 3 Zobrist families in three different parts of Illinois.a All three seem to have the same name for the immigrant from Europe who founded the line in the U.S. Thus we have a Rudolf Zobrist who settled in Chicago, another who settled in the area of Illinois adjoining St. Louis, and finally a third Rudolf came from Oberoenz, near Berne Switzerland to Woodford County near Morton, Illinois. It is only this third Rudolf that had a son who married into the Metz family and who therefore concerns us.

Rudolf Zobrist (1822-1894) emigrated from Oberoenz in the 1860's after the end of the U.S. Civil War. The Swiss Civil War had concluded in 1848 with a Federal system replacing the rule of the cantons and creating the modern Swiss state which banned mercenaries, except the Vatican Swiss Guard and forbade the cantons from accepting Jesuits. Perhaps Rudolf was not happy with these developments and so he sought to emigrate to America.
Rudolf and his wife Verena (Fannie) had a son, Jacob (1858-1909), born before they left Oberoenz and who married Mary Metz on December 20, 1881 in Tazewell County in Illinois.

This younger pair had 10 children, including Noah P (1896-1984) who married Mary Lavina and together they had 10 more. One of these was Alpha Wayne Zobrist (1921-1967). Alpha Wayne married Shirley Kruse in 1944 and these two bore Thomas and Linda. Thomas married Cindi Cali and they had a son Benjamin, the noted Major League Baseball player who won World Series MVP in both 2015 and 2016, for Kansas City and the Chicago Cubs, resp.

Rudolf and Fanny had a daughter, Susan who married Moses Beyer on February 22, 1885. Her sister Lena married Franklin Beyer (1864-1953). Another sister, Mary, married Jacob Edelman (1859-1926), and died in Kansas.
